🌲 Beginner’s Guide
Welcome to the mushroom forest! This guide is for anyone who is new to mushroom picking. Take it slowly, learn a few species at a time, and use several characteristics when examining a mushroom.
Before you go
Bring a mushroom guide or other reliable species information, a basket or airy container, a small knife and a way to photograph the mushroom.
Allow yourself plenty of time. As a beginner, it is better to learn a few species thoroughly than to try to learn them all at once.
Find the right habitat
Notice where the mushroom is growing. Coniferous forest, deciduous forest, mixed forest, meadow, pasture or other open ground? Is it growing in moss, among grass, on wood or near particular trees?
The habitat is an important part of the overall picture when you are trying to identify a species.
Examine the whole mushroom
Do not look only at the cap. Examine the cap, underside, stem, colour, shape, smell and habitat.
- What does the cap look like from above?
- Are there gills, pores or something else on the underside?
- What does the stem look like, and is there a ring or volva?
- Is the colour even or does it change?
- Is there a distinctive smell?
Learn to photograph the mushroom
A good photograph can be very helpful. Try to photograph the whole mushroom and preferably also the underside and stem. Also take a photo showing the habitat where it grew.
You can use Svampboken’s camera identification as a tool and then open the species in the guide to compare characteristics and look-alike species.
📷 Try Svampboken’s mushroom identificationBe extra careful with look-alike species
An edible species may have species that resemble it. Therefore, it is not enough for a mushroom to "look right" from a distance.
Always read the section about look-alike species for the species you think you have found. If you cannot safely distinguish the species, do not eat the mushroom.
When you get home
Review the day’s finds calmly. Sort the species and check the characteristics again before anything is prepared.
Remove soil and debris and handle the mushroom according to the requirements for the species you have safely identified.
Use your phone as a tool – not as the final answer
Svampboken can help you search, compare images and read about characteristics. Image identification can provide a suggestion, but it does not replace reliable species identification.
This is especially important when a species has poisonous or difficult-to-distinguish look-alikes.
📚 How to use Svampboken
- Search for the species in the list.
- Study the images from several angles.
- Read the characteristics and habitat.
- Check the look-alike species.
- Read the safety information before you even consider eating a wild mushroom.
